Sports Illustrated hosted its annual awards gala on Tuesday to celebrate the year in sports and recognize the top athletes of 2016.
LeBron James was honored as the 2016 SI Sportsperson of the Year after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first franchise NBA championship when they defeated the Warriors in last season’s NBA finals.
The man who introduced the Cavs superstar was his friend and music icon Jay-Z.
The rap mogul said LeBron James “lived up to and in most cases exceeded our very high expectations of him.”
Jay-Z also praised James for all his charitable works and the help he gave to communities.
“You messed around and got a triple-double in real life,” he said in jest.
