A Penny’s worth: Hardaway inducted into Orlando Magic Hall of Fame

Sports

Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway was finally inducted into the Orlando Magic Hall of Fame on Friday (Saturday in Manila).

He became just the fifth player in franchise history to be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.

Hardaway was acquired by the Magic in the 1993 Draft and spent six seasons averaging 19.0 points, 6.3 assists, 4.7 rebounds and almost 2.0 steals per game.

Penny was one of my favorite NBA players growing up, the other two were Gary Payton and Reggie Miller. I loved Hardaway’s game so much that everytime I played in summer leagues back in Jeddah, I made sure I wore the #1 jersey. Even staying up late/waking up early to catch Magic games on ESPN.

With his 6-foot-7 frame and flashy ways, Hardaway was most of the time likened to Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. He became an influential sports personality in the 90s, especially after Nike gave him his own signature line, Air Penny, which also gave birth to the iconic Lil’ Penny.

With Hardaway and Shaquille O’Neal in their fold, the Magic made the NBA Finals in 1995 but lost to the Houston Rockets.

Penny is 7th on the Magic’s all-time scoring list with 7,018 points. He is also third on the team’s all-time steals list (718) and fourth in assists (2,343).

Talk about getting your Penny’s worth.
